In mild and moderate overweight, we first regulate our diet and start exercising. When necessary, we provide weight control with gastric botox and sometimes a gastric balloon. In advanced obesity, we need more effective weight loss and then surgeries to maintain the lost weight.
As our weight increases, we cannot wear our socks, cannot take care of our personal care, our movements are restricted and we start not leaving the house. We know from research that obese individuals have heart attacks more often and get breast, ovarian and colon cancer. We lose people who are overweight 8-13 years earlier than normal people.
So which patients are suitable for surgery? We perform surgery if their body mass index is 40 and above or if their body mass index is 35 and they have diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnea. Our weight decreases significantly in the post-operative period and we get rid of our additional diseases. In other words, we regain our health.
Are surgeries very risky? The risk of bleeding and stitches coming loose in obesity surgeries is less than 1%. The risk of death is 0.05%.
We can go through this process very safely and successfully with closed (laparoscopic) surgeries in experienced doctors and quality hospitals.
