Diabetes Surgery – Metabolic Surgery

In patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes, especially after gastric bypass surgery, weight loss and diabetes can be treated. In the first year after the operation, diabetes can be completely treated in 80% of patients. However, type 2 diabetes patients who are not overweight can also be treated with surgery.

In the preoperative period, pancreatic reserve measurements can be used to determine patients who are suitable for metabolic or diabetes surgery. The success of the surgery varies between 80-90%. Metabolic surgery is not recommended for type 1, i.e. childhood-onset diabetes.

In metabolic or diabetes surgery, we perform a surgery called transit bipartition. The stomach is slightly narrowed and the back of the small intestines are connected to the stomach outlet. In this way, 1/3 of the food uses the normal digestive tract, while 2/3 of the food passes directly into the small intestines. Especially by using the back of the small intestine, both effective weight loss and diabetes can be treated.

In the postoperative period, the patient can stop taking diabetes medications (insulin or pills) when discharged. Postoperative leakage and bleeding from the suture lines is 1%, and the risk of death is 0.05%.
