Another surgery frequently performed in patients with advanced obesity is gastric or gastric bypass. Gastric bypass surgery is quite safe and is considered the gold standard in obesity treatment worldwide. We usually perform gastric bypass surgery more frequently in patients with advanced age, low metabolic rate, long-term sitting, and additional diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
In the gastric bypass method, a small section of the stomach is divided laparoscopically (closed) and the stomach is connected to the back of the small intestine. In this way, we change the food absorption path and provide faster weight loss. Although there are disruptions in the diet after the surgery, the probability of regaining weight decreases in this way. The remaining part of the stomach does not participate in digestion, and since the vascular structure is not disrupted, it does not cause any problems in the long term.
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are not evident after the surgery, we still evaluate blood tests with regular follow-ups. Post-operative leakage and bleeding from the suture lines is 1%, and the risk of death is 0.05%. The advantage of the treatment process after leakage from the suture lines is less challenging than gastric sleeve leaks. Gastric bypass requires more skill and experience than sleeve gastrectomy. In experienced hands, we achieve very good results, especially in the treatment of additional diseases such as diabetes.
